Design Project - crossover with designer

WITHIN EVERY BRUSHSTROKE OF THE BLUE LYON X GOLI DESIGN ARE STORIES OF LONG-AGO TIME AND FARAWAY LANDS. TALES OF HISTORY AND CULTURE, DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS, BEING AND BECOMING – RECOUNTED BY A VISIONARY ARTIST AND DESIGNER WHO DIPS INTO THE MAGNIFICENCE OF OLD TO CREATE THE RESPLENDENCE OF NEWS.

From her mother’s side was a French family of seamstresses who made their own lace and created their own linen. Her childhood ambition was actually costume design, but in tandem with her first year of Art College she apprenticed with a textile designer. So if not costume, textiles were certainly the next natural thing.

The designer has always been inspired by her roots, triggering the starting point of her creative process. She is a believer of story-telling through textiles – woven tales of people and places, history and ancestors. “I am very passionate about the fact that textiles tell the story of who we are, our origins and our dreams. Textile design can trigger those long lost stories we carry in our DNA.”

Last summer, for the very first time, the designer visited the small village in the Pyrenees where her mother’s family comes from in France. Seeing, breathing, touching her roots struck another creative chord that culminated in this latest Blue Lyon x Goli design. Reaching back in time as she loves to do, the designer has created Blue Lyon that pays homage to 17th-century French silk patterns and is steeped in tradition. Rich and timeless, this pattern is one that hardworking peasant women would have loved to have in their homes. Inspired by the aspirations of these proletariat ancestors who had no money but had impeccable taste, the designer believes:

“Textiles not only tell real stories but they also tell of our dreams and who we wish we could be.

My ancestor peasant women lived in farm houses but dreamed of living in large chateaus surrounded by those beautiful Lyon silks!”  Similarly, the Goli design was born in the history of Persian rugs as century-old luxury items and valued collectibles across many cultures. Meaning “little flower” in Persian, Goli resonates both natural and extravagant beauty – and is equally striking whether in a simple, single-hued terracotta or in lavish, multi-color

splendor. Within her process, the designer has to recreate each design to fit the form. That means having to consider the form and materials, plus understanding the technical limitations within each production process and using those limitations as part of the design. Blue Lyon x Goli are brilliant in their effortless translation from fabric to ceramics. In her own words, these designs are “timeless, classic and dramatic”. Within every fiber is weaved the story of a little girl who was enamored by historical and ethnic costumes, yet fell randomly into textile design – now a woman for whom, “designing is like breathing”.
